Nutrients are all the useful substances that we need to consume in our food in order to survive, function and stay healthy. They provide us with energy, and they facilitate chemical and biological processes necessary to sustain life.

Nutrients can be divided in macronutrients – they provide energy for your body and you consume them in larger quantities – proteins, carbohydrates and fats; and micronutrients, that play important biological functions (such as helping certain chemical reactions important for function of our organism), and we usually need them in small quantities – those are vitamins and minerals.

Apart from macro- and micronutrients, water and fiber also have important biological functions.

And finally there are some other substances that are found in food, traditionally not counted as nutrients, but which can still have important biological effects, both positive and negative.
